The Ultimate Anchorage Bakery Guide

When you think of Alaskan cuisine, what comes to mind? We’re confident in assuming succulent salmon is first, followed by the extravaganza of incredible seafood served throughout our city. Oh, and then there’s reindeer sausage, birch syrup, and wild berries! But did you know that our state has a long association with bread? After all, long-term Alaskans are called sourdoughs!

This historic connection to bread and baked goods is reflected in Anchorage’s best bakeries. If you’re a fan of delectable, award-winning donuts, flaky, butter-layered croissants, bagels with the perfect chew, and macarons that crunch and melt in all the right places, you’re going to love our city!

This guide is your shortcut to Anchorage’s most beloved bakeries. These are the spots locals swear by, and that includes the team behind our Anchorage guided tours! Scroll down to dig in, and please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop – The Gold Standard

718 K St, Anchorage, AK 99501

2520 E 16th Ave, Anchorage, AK 99508

If you only make it to one bakery while you’re in Anchorage, make it this one. And with two locations to choose from, there’s even less excuse for missing out! The Fire Island team works away in the small hours of the morning — cracking eggs, zesting fruit, and feeding sourdough — to lovingly create small batches of bread, croissants, muffins, and scones. And we’re all the better off for their efforts!

Everything here is handmade using the finest, freshest ingredients. This includes organic flour specially selected and milled for artisan baking. Our favorite? It’s hard to pick only one, but the Alaskan Wildberry Scone is a delicious mix of rhubarb and blueberries — it’s tangy, tender, and unforgettable. But what we love most about Fire Island’s treats is that they don’t rely on sugar for flavor; they let high-quality ingredients speak for themselves.

And while the baked goods are something to shout about, the community built around the bakery is just as special. Everyone at Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop is committed to great service, warmth, and friendliness. Everything here just adds up to an unparalleled bakery experience.

Both Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop locations are open Wednesday to Sunday, 7 AM to 4 PM.

Flying Dutchman European Pastry Shop – A European Touch in Midtown

2101 Abbott Rd #9, Anchorage, AK 99507, United States

Tucked away in Midtown is Flying Dutchman, a European-style pastry shop where the display case looks more like an art exhibit than a bakery counter. You’ll find strudels, chocolate ganache cakes, Black Forest whipped cream cakes, and so much more, all made using traditional European recipes. They’re especially known for their wide variety of beautifully crafted tarts.

The range of flavors for cakes, cheesecakes, tarts, flans, and pastries is incredible. And this includes savory options alongside sweet treats, like delectable meat rolls wrapped in puff pastry.

Flying Dutchman is welcoming, familiar, and refreshingly no-frills. If you’re craving something sweet that leans old-world, this is your spot. It’s also a great place to grab something small for a picnic or a road trip on an Anchorage scenic day drive.

Local tip: If you’ve got a four-legged friend by your side, Flying Dutchman also handmakes dog-friendly treats for furry travel buddies!

Sweet Caribou – Colorful, Crunchy, Perfect Macarons

701 W 36th Ave #19, Anchorage, AK 99503

Sweet Caribou specializes in creating a dazzling rainbow of mouthwatering macarons. With staff trained in Paris, they craft the best macarons in Alaska! And the flavors are almost endless. They have a core of popular staples that everyone loves alongside a rotation of daily flavors, but their gifted team can make nearly any flavor and color combination to suit any need.

The texture is always perfect: crisp shell, soft center, not too sweet. If you’re looking for a uniquely Alaskan sweet souvenir, a box of these is a safe bet (if they make it back to your hotel uneaten).

Sweet Caribou also provides great homemade breakfast burritos as well as lunch bowls and sandwiches, so why not make a meal of it? If you’re looking for more local after-meal treats while you’re in town, don’t miss our picks for five unforgettable Alaskan desserts.

Cake Studio – Gorgeous Cakes & Gluten-Free Goodies

320 W 5th Ave #156, Anchorage, AK 99501

Cake Studio is where Anchorage turns for birthday cakes, wedding cakes, and cupcakes that taste as good as they look. And they look really good!

But there’s more to this spot than fondant flowers and buttercream swirls. It’s also one of the city’s best options for gluten-free baked goods, with rotating GF cupcakes and cakes that are light, moist, and full of flavor.

Flavors range from classics like red velvet to rotating creations like lemon pistachio or raspberry white chocolate. Call ahead if you want a custom cake — but if you’re just looking for a treat on the go, the cupcake case is always stocked.

With all these sweet treats, it’s easy to forget to plan your actual meals! Let us help you focus on lunches and dinners — read our blog 5 Dishes That You Have to Eat in Alaska when you have finished here.

Jason’s Donuts – Eagle River’s Sweetheart

12801 Old Glenn Hwy, Eagle River, AK 99577

Okay, this one’s not technically in Anchorage. But it’s only about 20 minutes away, and you won’t regret the short detour.

Jason’s Donuts in Eagle River has become the stuff of local legend, especially after making it to the finals in a recent national donut competition. But despite this newfound fame, Jason’s Donuts is still friendly, unpretentious, and focused on what matters: fresh, fantastic donuts.

Favorites include the maple, lemon, chocolate, and the simple but sublime plain glazed. If you’re heading north for a hike or scenic drive, make this your breakfast stop.

With such award-winning donuts, we might have to include them in our list of food Alaska is known for soon!

The Kobuk – A Historic Sip & Sweet Stop Downtown

504 W 5th Ave, Anchorage, AK 99501

Step into The Kobuk and it’s like stepping back in time. Located in the historic Kimball Building downtown, The Kobuk is part tea shop, part gift store, part bakery — and entirely charming.

The must-try? Their old-fashioned donuts. Fried and glazed perfection, they’re simple and nostalgic in the best possible way. Our favorite is their Fireweed Glaze donut! Pair one with a hot Russian tea and you’ve got yourself a break worth building into your day.

It’s a cozy stop if you’re exploring downtown or heading to the Anchorage Museum nearby.

Local tip: Visiting the Kimball Building is a chance to connect with our city’s past. Established in 1915, it’s the second oldest building in Anchorage and remains the only original commercial structure still standing at its original location from Anchorage’s founding year.

907 Bagel Co – Anchorage’s Bagel Answer

609 F St, Anchorage, AK 99506

Finding a great bagel in Alaska isn’t always easy, but 907 Bagel Co has cracked the code. Boiled and baked in-house, these bagels are chewy, golden, and generously portioned. You can build your own sandwich, grab a bag with house-made spreads, or keep it classic with a toasted everything bagel and cream cheese.

It’s a solid breakfast (and lunch) option before hitting the trails — or if you just want a break from the usual hotel buffet routine.

907 Bagel Co is open Sunday to Wednesday — Sundays 9 AM to 2 PM, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays 7:30 AM to 2 PM.
